The Special Criminal Chamber of the Judiciary confirmed that Former President Pedro Castillo committed the crime of rebellion on December 7, 2022, the day he announced the dissolution of the Congress and the reorganization of the justice system. In its resolution, the court maintained that this fact was fully proven and that the former president acted deliberately, with a plan aimed at breaking the constitutional order.
According to the court, the documents seized at Castillo’s home support that his Message to the Nation was already prepared to be executed with the specifications that he finally read on television. Furthermore, the referee considered it proven that Betssy Chávez and Aníbal Torres knew the content of the advertisement. After the message, both approached to congratulate the then head of state with a hug.
“The accused Castillo Terrones stole the exercise of power, configuring the assumption of rebellion proscribed in Article 45 of the Political Constitution,” said Judge Norma Carbajal.

The court also points out that it was Chávez who sought to ensure the support of the ministers, sending them a message in which he summoned them under the premise that it was a “historic day,” which for the court reinforced the thesis of prior coordination.
It is worth remembering that the Prosecutor’s Office requests 34 years ofprison for the crime of rebellionfollowing the events of December 2022. Likewise, he requested 25 years for the co-defendant in this process, the former prime ministerBetssy Chavezwho remains asylum in the Mexican embassy waiting for safe passage that would allow her to leave the country.
“If the conspiracy issue were chosen, we request the following sentence for Mr.Pedro Castillo Terrones: 11 years, 5 months and 15 days for the crime of conspiracy; 10 months and 15 days for abuse of authority; and 6 years and 9 months for serious disturbance. In total, 19 years and 30 days in prison,” was the prosecutor’s requirement.
