Lula comments on Jair Bolsonaro’s arrest: "Democracy lesson”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, this Wednesday (26), that Brazil “gave a lesson in democracy to the world” with the arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro and military personnel who plotted a coup d’état in Brazil. Lula comments on Jair Bolsonaro's arrest: "Democracy lesson”

“I’m happy. Not because of anyone’s arrest, I’m happy because this country has demonstrated that it is mature to exercise democracy to its fullest”, he said.

In a ceremony at Palácio do Planalto, Lula sanctioned income tax exemption for those earning up to R$5,000 and commented on the end of the coup plot process in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for seven defendants.

With this, the beginning of the execution of sentencesin the case of Bolsonaro, 27 years and three months in prison.

“Without any fuss, the Brazilian justice system showed its strength, was not frightened by threats from outside and carried out an excellent trial where there is no opposition accusation. It’s all accusations from within the gang that tried to carry out a coup in this country in [2022]”, said President Lula.

“For the first time in 500 years in the history of this country, you have someone arrested for an attempted coup. You have a former president of the Republic and you have four four-star generals arrested. In a demonstration that democracy is valid for everyone. Democracy is no one’s privilege, it is the right of 215 million Brazilians”, he added.

The conviction took place on September 11th. By 4 votes to 1, the First Panel of the STF convicted the seven defendants for the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage through violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed property.

Jair Bolsonaro – former President of the Republic: 27 years and three months;
Place of arrest: Federal Police Superintendence, in Brasília.

Walter Braga Netto – former Bolsonaro minister and candidate for vice president on the 2022 ticket: 26 years old;
Place of arrest: Vila Militar, in Rio de Janeiro.

Almir Garnier – former Navy commander: 24 years;
Place of arrest: Naval Radio Station facilities, in Brasília.

Anderson Torres – former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Security of the Federal District: 24 years;
Place of arrest: 19th DF Military Police Battalion, located in the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in Brasília.

Augusto Heleno – former minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI): 21 years old;
Place of arrest: Planalto Military Command (CMP), in Brasília.

Paulo Sérgio Nogueira – former Minister of Defense: 19 years;
Place of arrest: Planalto Military Command (CMP), in Brasília.

Alexandre Ramagem – former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin): 16 years, one month and 15 days.
He is on the run in Miami, in the United States. The arrest warrant will be included in the National Prison Monitoring Bank (BNMP).
