The price of accommodation in the city of Belém more than doubled in November compared to October. The increase was 155.24%. The cost of air tickets also increased significantly in the capital of Pará and rose 25.32%.
The data is part of the Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), released this Wednesday (26) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The IPCA-15 is considered the preview of the country’s official inflation.
The pressure on the price of reservations and airline tickets meant that Belém’s inflation forecast, of 0.67%, was the highest among the 11 regions surveyed monthly by IBGE, exceeding the figure by more than three times. IPCA-15 of the country as a whole (0.20%).
The explanation goes through the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which ended last Saturday (22), after 13 days of negotiation. Also in November, Belém hosted the Climate Summit, on the 6th and 7th, an international meeting that brought together heads of state and government.
In 12 months, the price of accommodation rose 204.63% in Greater Belém, 16 times more than the average for the country as a whole (12.71%). In São Paulo, the country’s largest city, the increase in accommodation prices was 4.48% in the month and 10.86% in 12 months.
Regional weight
According to IBGE, inflation in the metropolitan region of Belém has a weight of 4.46% in the country’s inflation. Greater São Paulo has the largest weight, 33.45%. In other words, if the impact on the price of accommodation were in São Paulo, the result would be much more felt in the country’s inflation.
Economics professor Gilberto Braga, from Ibmec-RJ, explains that, despite the concentrated location of COP30 in Belém, the inflationary effect spreads across the country.
“Even though it is an end of the travel network, even those who did not go to the Belém destination end up being influenced by the need for connections at other hub airports,” he told Brazil Agency.
“So, in some way, COP30 helps to increase inflation in this preview of the IPCA-15”, he adds.

According to the IPCA-15 schedule, the price survey carried out by IBGE was carried out from October 14th to November 13th, that is, it did not capture the entire COP30 period.
The “full” IPCA for November is calculated throughout the month ─ includes the entire COP30 event ─ and will be released on December 10th.
