MADRID, Spain.- US Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart demanded this Monday to the Cuban regime the immediate release of political prisoner Yosvany Rosell García Caso, who is in critical condition after more than a month in hunger strike. In a publication in X, the legislator warned about the extreme deterioration of his health and the pressure against his family.
“I demand the immediate release of political prisoner Yosvany Rosell García Caso, currently in critical condition after more than 30 days on hunger strike without receiving medical attention,” Díaz-Balart wrote.
Likewise, he denounced that his wife and family are being subjected to surveillance, threats and harassment by the regime.
“Their lives are in danger. Another reminder that the brutal regime in Cuba has no respect for human life, dignity or human rights,” said the congressman.
García Caso, 37, completes 34 days of hunger strike this Tuesday. The protester of July 11, 2021 (11J) was recently transferred to intermediate therapy after spending more than a month without eating food and without receiving adequate medical care, according to his wife, Mailín Sánchez, in statements to Martí News.
“The doctor told me that they had decided to transfer him to intermediate therapy because of the many days he has not eaten and, thus, anything could be taken to intensive care,” he said this Sunday. Until that moment, García Caso remained hospitalized in the Prison Room of the Clinical Surgical Hospital of Holguín.

Meanwhile, this week the Defense CD Complaint Center presented an urgent request for a precautionary measure of protection before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), warning that García Caso’s situation poses a real and imminent risk of death.
According to the organization, this would be “the only measure capable of avoiding irreparable damage.” Its executive director, Juan Carlos Vargas, said: “Yosvany Rosell García’s life is in imminent danger. We request an urgent precautionary measure from the IACHR and demand his immediate release. Every minute counts.”
García Caso began the strike on October 23 to demand freedom for all political prisoners on the Island. Sentenced to 15 years in prison for his participation in the demonstrations of July 11, 2021, during his time in prison, he has resorted to hunger strikes as a method of protest on several occasions.
