Chihuahua, Chih., Agricultural producers in Chihuahua blocked the entrances to the Mexican customs offices in Ciudad Juárez and forced workers to vacate the facilities; They also blocked the passage of trailers on the Córdova-Las Américas and Zaragoza international bridges and at the Santa Teresa checkpoint.

The protesters warned that they will maintain the protests until the federal Ministry of the Interior addresses the five points of their petition, related to support programs, credits, guaranteed prices for crops and the new General Water Law.

The take from the office next to the Córdova-Las Américas bridge, it was carried out yesterday at 9 a.m. by some 200 farmers from the National Front for the Rescue of the Mexican Countryside and National Agrodynamics, led by the leaders Eraclio Rodríguez Gómez and Arturo Rentería Duarte.

Two hours later, producers from the LeBarón neighborhood closed truck traffic on the Zaragoza international bridge, and during the afternoon farmers from the municipality of Ascensión blocked the passage at the San Teresa border crossing, suburban Ciudad Juárez, and on the border between Chihuahua and New Mexico.

The evacuation of customs and the blockades at the crossing points to the United States caused kilometer-long lines of cargo trucks, while automobile and pedestrian traffic was allowed. At press time, the protest continued.

The leader Eraclio Rodríguez, in an interview for The Daywarned that the closures will continue “as many days as necessary, if the government does not react, we will continue here… we hope that everything goes smoothly, that no one infiltrates us.

“We are not going to allow customs procedures to be carried out to slightly slow down trade between Mexico and the United States, and make this unfair transaction of agricultural products visible,” he accused.

Yesterday, the peasant demonstration affected around 2 thousand import procedures and the problem will be greater if the closure persists.

Due to the blockades, 1,500 trailers were stranded on the two international bridges and at the Santa Teresa checkpoint, plus the trucks stopped on the Pan-American highway or at the demonstration at the kilometer 20 roundabout, at the southern access to Ciudad Juárez, reported Manuel Sotelo Suárez, local president of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation.

Javier Meléndez, a farmer in the Samalayuca section of Juárez, accused that the federal government undertook a political operation to divide, not to solve the five demands of the producers, among which he highlighted establishing fair prices for basic grains such as corn, and putting a stop to the large mass industrialists: the Minsa and Maseca companies.

He explained that the offer to corn producers in Jalisco, Michoacán and Guanajuato of support of 940 pesos per ton of corn “was a trap because the industrialists adjusted their price by a thousand pesos, they bought even cheaper to keep that subsidy.”
