The fans flooded the field after the promotion of the Chapecoense to the Series Athe highest category of Brazilon Monday, marking his return to the top competition nine years after a plane crash killed most of its players and staff.
Chapecoense, recently relegated in 2021, regained the category after a 1-0 victory over Atlético Goianiense in Serie B. The home team made headlines in November 2016 when their plane crashed on the way to Colombia for the Copa Sudamericana final, claiming the lives of 71 of the 77 passengers, including most of the players and staff.
The club recovered quickly after the accident, remaining in the top flight in 2017 and 2018. However, its performance faltered in the following seasons, leading to relegation in 2019 and 2021.
