Cuba creates an Artificial Intelligence Consortium with state companies and private actors

Starting this month, Cuba will have a Consortium of Artificial intelligencean entity that will bring together universities, state companies and private actors to coordinate developments in that area in the country.

The consortium was announced at the Havana International Fair, which introduced, for the first time, AI among its central axes.

Rafael Luis Torralba, president of the United Scientific and Technological Park of Havana, explained to Latin Press that this association will be born with 22 founding members and will be formalized this November 27.

The objective, he points out, is to avoid “isolated efforts”, share knowledge and facilitate participation in regional and global projects. “A platform like this helps everyone involved know the solutions that the other is developing and can shorten their path,” he said.

Torralba explains that the consortium will be open to new incorporations and that the next big step will be the 2026 Computer Fair, in which they intend to surpass what was presented this week.

The focus is on training our own models with Cuban data—such as the Cecilia project at the University of Havana—so that the AI responds to the “real needs of the country.”

More than 80 Cuban solutions with AI

More than 80 Artificial Intelligence tools created in Cuba by state and private companies, universities, research centers and government entities were exhibited at the first national stand dedicated to this technology.

The space groups the solutions into four lines: Industry, Smart City, Art and Education, and Health, with the participation of at least five provinces. The Vice Minister of Communications, Ailyn Febles, explained that, in a short time, this catalog was assembled, which will serve as a permanent record of the Cuban AI ecosystem.

“Exhibitors will find alliance opportunities in the area of artificial intelligence to apply AI in their respective fields,” the official stated to Cubadebate.

The Fair incorporated multilingual chatbots and automatic translation tools, as well as sentiment analysis mechanisms, useful for evaluating public perception in real time and generating information for decision-making during the event.

FIHAV 2025: Cuba bets on AI to modernize its largest trade fair

The portal was presented there CubaDigital.aipowered by Dofleini Software SRL together with the Ministry of Communications, a directory of organizations, interactive tools and training resources, the founder and president of the company, Carlos Miguel Reyes Pérez, also a member of the Cuban Parliament, said on Facebook.

“Cuba has a solid history in artificial intelligence since the 70s,” highlighted Febles, recalling that Computer Science was one of the first majors to incorporate this topic.

The technological commitment at the Havana Fair comes at a particularly critical moment for the country. The lack of foreign currency limits the country’s ability to finance its own technological development, a point on which the Government, scientists and independent analysts agree.

However, with this background scenario, the integration of AI in FIHAV is presented as an attempt to reposition the fair, and by extension the country, in a more modern and competitive economic map, according to the authorities.
