Dozens of women spoke out against sexist violence in front of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), while others carried out the traditional March of the Brides, commemorating this Tuesday the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The women who went to the Attorney General’s Office made an “urgent” call to the authorities to pay attention to violence against women in its different manifestations.
They demanded that the Government, in a document, take «real actions» to change the reality that Dominican women live.
«We will continue to raise our voices, stay vigilant and accompany institutions in all actions aimed at protecting life and the dignity of Dominican women,” the note said.
Meanwhile, at the state Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) the March of the Brides took place, in which about 20 women paraded dressed in white to draw attention to sexist violence.
Between slogans like «“We want rights, we don’t want flowers,” Women spoke out against femicides, a crime that has been reduced this year in the country, where the greatest consequences are seen in orphaned children.
On the other hand, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Henry Molina stated that 36% of the cases that enter the system in criminal matters They are directly related to sexist and domestic violence.
Molina stated that these figures are not just statistics, but rather they constitute a map that allows us to size the problem, make informed decisions and execute actions that constantly improve the Justice service.
He considered that access to Justice is not a privilege, but an inalienable human right that must be exercised without fear or obstacles, without looking at gender, economic, immigration or other similar situations.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was adopted by the United Nations in memory of the Dominican sisters Patria, Minerva and Teresa Mirabal, who were brutally murdered on November 25, 1960 by the tyranny of Rafael Trujillo.
All three were wives of political prisoners. and their murder occurred when they returned from visiting them in prison.
