There were 13% fewer complaints of gender violence than in 2024
On the international day to combat gender violence, the Departmental Commission for a Life Free of Gender Violence of Cerro Largo, called a press conference to reflect on the importance of the date.
The contact with media representatives took place at the Headquarters of the Specialized Unit in Domestic and Gender Violence, which this Tuesday celebrated the 33rd anniversary of its foundation, the oldest in the country.
On this occasion, the authorities focused on vicarious violence due to the events that occurred recently and that shocked the entire country.
“The National Council decided this year to emphasize vicarious violence, which is why this year’s slogan is Vicarious Violence is Gender Violence, Recognizing It is the First Step to Stop It” revealed the Departmental Director of MIDES.
“Recent studies, mostly academia and also Civil Society organizations, conceptualize vicarious violence as a type of gender violence whose main victims are sons and daughters, but where the main objective is to harm women” said Ms. Elida Díaz.
“The most extreme manifestation of vicarious violence is infanticide, that is, the murder of children. Unfortunately this year as a society we were affected and there were episodes that went through us. From the Commission and from the institutions that worked on the issue, we understand that our main challenge is to continue working to support cultural change, to break with that naturalization that gender violence is something in the private sphere, it is something in the inner circle.” he remarked. “We understand that gender violence is a part of our social reality and that is why we have to be aware and consistent as those responsible for the State with the responses that we make available to the population and to the women who are victims of this situation.” he added.
“As a Commission we have this challenge, we have this commitment to continue working, betting towards that” insisted the Director of MIDES in Cerro Largo.
THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS DROPPED
The Director of Domestic and Gender Violence of the Cerro Largo Police Headquarters at the beginning recalled and highlighted the 33rd anniversary of the Specialized Unit. “At the time it was called the Women and Minors Police Station, the first in the country at the interior level” he stressed.
In relation to domestic violence crimes and those associated with them, he said that from January 1 to October 31 of this year, 921 complaints were registered. “This reflects a decrease compared to last year of 13%” revealed Chief Commissioner Javier Techera.
“The month in which the most complaints were received was July and the month in which the fewest complaints were received was September” reported.
“The peak days, with the most complaints, are Sundays, and the days with the least complaints have been on Wednesdays” he stated.
“We have a total of 84 people formalized, not only for domestic violence but also for associated crimes – damages, non-compliance and others – and we have a total of 41 active ankle bracelets to date” Techera stated.
“At the country level, we have a complaint every 12 minutes for domestic violence” accurate.
SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS FOR HARASSMENT
The person in charge of the Melo Labor Office, Executing Unit of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, also provided revealing data about the problems that women must face on a daily basis.
“We understand that today is a day to commemorate, but also to commit ourselves. Every November 25th we are united by the same cause, which is to say enough to violence against women in all its forms and also to say yes to a life free of violence, to live without fear, in freedom and with equal opportunities” expressed Leticia Corujo.
“We want to make it known that we are in a position to receive different types of harassment – sexual, moral, abuse, discrimination or repression – and they can be done through online procedures,” he reported. “We have received many from that side. We do not have statistics because the balance is made at the end of the year, but we can say that compared to last year in person in our Office we have received a large volume of complaints of harassment” he assured.
“We believe that we have a fundamental tool because violence is not always seen, but it exists not only in homes and in relationships, it also exists in the workplace” he pointed out. “We are working to accompany these processes and every time we act in a particular case, we are transforming the reality of a person” expressed Leticia Corujo, Head of the Melo Labor Office of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
