Mexico investigates migrant smuggling after intercepting 82 Cubans on the US border

The authorities of the Mexican state of Coahuila opened an investigation for illegal immigrant trafficking after intercepting this Sunday a trailer with 82 Cubans on federal highway 57, which connects the US border with the city of Piedras Negras.

“These people had been without water or food for several hours. Three of them, two adults and a minor, had to be attended by Red Cross personnel,” he tells 14ymedio the mayor of the municipality of Castaños, located in Monclova, Juan Antonio Garza García.

Gian Carlo Cabrera, 14, received medical assistance due to hypertension and dehydration. “In the box there were 12 minors, all crowded together, this is inhumane,” the official mentions. “A woman named Micaela had some discomfort due to the diabetes she suffers from and heart disease.”

Another of the Cubans treated was Teisy Martínez Valenzuela, 42, who also suffered from dehydration. “He told us that he had seven hours without drinking water because the journey was long and there was no bathroom,” mentions the mayor.

A source from the state prosecutor’s office confirmed to this newspaper that the relationship that this event may have with the rescue of 160 migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala who were abandoned by a coyote in the box of a trailer the past 6 is being investigated. “The smuggler detainee faces murder charges because he turned off the air conditioning in the box trailer before leaving them. Those affected paid between 4,000 and 5,000 Mexican pesos to reach the border with the United States. Now, with the Cubans it is different, they are charged in dollars for which they are seldom placed in cargo trucks.”

The agent reveals that the arrest of the group of Cubans occurred because they were betrayed. “A call was received and the person who made it gave the time they would pass through the section known as ‘Y Griega’ and the type of unit in which they were taken, apparently to Piedras Negras to pass them to the United States.”

The 82 natives of the Island, 42 men, 28 women and 12 minors, were transferred by Immigration personnel to a station, where they will define their stay in Mexico.

This Sunday, US Border Patrol agents from the Ajo station found 77 migrants near Lukeville, Arizona. “The group was made up of family units and adults, mostly from Cuba,” according to Reported Officer John R. Modlin. “Others were from Brazil, Mexico and Peru.”

Data recently released by the United States Department of Justice reveals that coyotes, who are dedicated to crossing the Mexican border to undocumented immigrants, are charging between 8,000 and 11,000 dollars per person. “Smugglers continue to exploit immigrants from numerous countries for profit,” notes R. Modlin.
