María Corina Machado urges Hondurans to defend every vote in Sunday’s presidential elections

María Corina Machado does not rule out going to Rodrigo Paz's inauguration: "Between now and November 8, many things can happen."

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado urged Hondurans this Monday to “open a new chapter” in the presidential elections on Sunday, November 30and encouraged them to remain at the voting centers until “every vote” is counted.

Through a video broadcast on social networks, Machado – winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize – addressed the citizens of Honduras, a country immersed in a climate of tension in the final stretch of the electoral campaign, marked by political violence and allegations of fraud.

In her message, the opponent claimed to speak “from the experience of a country that has fought and advanced to rescue its democracy and freedom.”

“I know what it means to face machines of power that try to impose silence and fear, but I also know that when a people rises up with dignity, courage and love, nothing can stop it,” said Machado. The message was recorded on the occasion of the elections in which the successor of Xiomara Castro in the Honduran Presidency.

Of the five presidential candidates, the favorites are:

  • Rixi Moncada, of the Freedom and Refoundation Party (Libre), in the government
  • Salvador Nasralla, of the Liberal Party
  • Nasry Asfura, of the National Party

Machado asks Hondurans not to abandon their voting center

Given this “crucial appointment” on November 30, in which “every vote counts,” Machado recommended that voters verify the vote receiving board that corresponds to them in the National Electoral Council (CNE).

He also encouraged them to “spread the word” and help family or friends so that everyone knows where to exercise their right to vote. Likewise, he stressed that “voting is not enough” and that democracy “is defended by taking care of each vote.”

Machado highlighted that Honduras “has something very favorable: a manual process, where paper by paper is counted.”

“The law gives them the right to be present, as citizen auditors, at every moment of the count and when the minutes are filled out,” he recalled. “Do not leave your voting center until every vote is counted. Your presence is a civic, powerful and legitimate way to defend democracy,” concluded the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
