Fire in an apartment in Plaza de la Revolución leaves one person dead

Incendio de un apartamento del edificio de la calle Lombillo 792, entre Hidalgo y Estancia, en el municipio Plaza de la Revolución

According to the MININT, “the causes” of the incident are being investigated.

MIAMI, United States. – A person died this Monday in the fire of an apartment in the building at 792 Lombillo Street, between Hidalgo and Estancia, in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, in Havana, according to a note on Facebook of the Administration Council of that territory.

The statement confirms the death of one person in the incident. “At this time, the causes are being investigated by specialists from the Fire Department and the MININT,” indicates the official note.

So far, neither the Administration Council nor local media in Havana have offered data on the identity or age of the victim, the number of people who lived in the apartment, possible injuries, extent of material damage or whether it was necessary to evacuate other homes in the building. Nor has any hypothesis been advanced about the origin of the fire.

The official information available about this fire is limited, for now, to the brief statement reproduced by the Havana press. No photographs of the interior of the building or medical reports have been published that clarify whether there were people treated in hospitals or a detailed report of the structural damage to the building.

The Administration Council of Plaza de la Revolución has reported on other occasions about relevant fires in its territory. On September 24, 2023, a fire in the area known as Casitas de Kholy, in the Colón Nuevo Vedado Popular Council, caused the death of a 15-year-old teenager and left 18 injured. Then, Havana Tribune He stated that “the probable cause of the accident was the explosion of an electric motorcycle that was being charged at the scene, so investigation actions by the relevant authorities are continuing.”

In September 2024, the same entity reported another accidentthis time in the kitchen of the La Florentina restaurant, located on the upper floors of the Capri hotel, in Vedado. On that occasion was specified that “the fire, caused by an electrical outage in the kitchen, was mitigated in one hour, thanks to the quick action of the Fire Command of our Municipality,” and that two workers inhaled smoke but were treated and discharged as “out of danger.”

Added to these events is the fire reported in June 2024 in the Girón building, in Havana, where, according to the official portal Cubadebateauthorities initially indicated that the causes of the incident were still unknown while firefighters worked to extinguish it.

Independent media have linked this succession of accidents to the deterioration of buildings and electrical systems in the capital. The authorities themselves have pointed out electrical failures or explosions of charging electric motorcycles as probable causes of fatal or large fires, both in Plaza de la Revolución and in Central Havana.
