The governor of Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD), Hector Valdez Albizureported that, despite the challenging international environment, it is projected that the national economy would generate around 46,000 million dollars this year, coming mainly from exports for 14,900 million, income from tourism for 11,200 million and remittances for more than 11.7 billion dollars.
Additionally, the foreign direct investment would surpass by fourth consecutive year 4 billion dollars, reaching in 2025 more than 4.8 billioncomfortably covering the estimated current account deficit of 2.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
This favorable performance has contributed to maintaining the relative stability of the exchange rate since the international reserves reach 14.5 billion dollars, equivalent to 11% of GDP and more than five months of imports, levels that exceed the metrics recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to a note from BCRD.

Valdez Albizu pointed out that the dynamics of the Dominican economy have been conditioned by a turbulent international panorama, characterized by high levels of uncertainty and more restrictive financial conditions than expected, while inflation has remained within the target range of 4.0% ± 1.0% for 30 consecutive months and a liquidity provision program has been implemented with the objective of contributing to the channeling of financing to the productive sectors.
Despite the demanding global context, the official foresees that economic activity will experience a gradual recoverysupported by monetary conditions more favorable conditions and a greater boost to fiscal policy, reflected in the increase in public investment.
In that sense, it is projected that the economic growth It would close this year at around 2.5% and would resume a pace close to potential in 2026, with an expansion between 4.0% and 5.0% in 2026.
The governor expressed himself in these terms during version 305 of the Meeting of the Central American Monetary Council (CMCA), held in Punta Canaand which included the participation of the presidents and governors of the central banks of the Central American region, as well as officials of the IMFthe Inter-American Development Bank, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Regional Technical Assistance Center for Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic and the Bank for International Settlements.
Valdez Albizu presided over the event together with Álvaro González Ricci, president of the Bank of Guatemala and vice president of the CMCA.
The owner of the BCRD highlighted the fundamental role that these meetings play, reaffirming the commitment to continue implementing concrete measures to promote the macroeconomic stability and contribute to the well-being of Central America and the Dominican Republic.
Exchange reclassification
Furthermore, the governor considered that the IMF has recognized important advances in exchange matters that have led the international organization to classify the exchange rate regime of Dominican as floatation.
This reclassification has a positive impact on the calculation of the adequacy metric of international reserves (ARA) for the country that uses said multilateral organization.
The work agenda of the event included presentations by the governors and presidents of the Central American central banks on the evolution of economic activity, financial conditions and economic projections for the year 2026, emphasizing the importance of reducing inflationary pressures and maintain the growth path in the region.
