The president José Jerí He left open the possibility of entering the Mexican Embassy in Lima to capture the former Chief of Staff, Betssy Chávez, who has remained in asylum there since November 2. His statements have caused a stir in the political and diplomatic sphere.
The president revealed that, despite the seriousness of the case, the Executive has not yet defined what it will do in response to the court order that issued five months of preventive detention against Pedro Castillo’s former minister. According to him, any movement must be evaluated with extreme caution due to the strict international obligations that Peru faces.
“Mexico knows that, if Betssy Chávez leaves the embassy, she will be captured immediately. It also knows that there are Peruvian police outside and that is visible. We have not yet meditated with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet on what concrete measure we will take, because we have just learned of the sentence. We are going to meditate a lot. Every action must be thought out in accordance with the limitations we have, in accordance with the international commitments we have,” he said in an interview with El Comercio.
However, what really caused a stir was the following sentence: “There is a court order today and I am a person open to all kinds of possibilities and decisions. I am not limited and, if you have to enter the Mexican embassy, it will be done. I have demonstrated with concrete actions, that many did not expect, that my hand does not shake. I am convinced that we are all judged by actions.”
From Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested that Chávez was a victim of political persecution, a version that Jerí has flatly rejected by ensuring that he only complies with what is dictated by the Constitution.
“No one is persecuted in Peru, no former president is kidnapped. I am not a dictator and I have only fulfilled the mandate of the Constitution. I understand that they talk nonsense as part of a political defense rather than a legal one. People already know who is who, there is nothing to invent anything, it is facts that count,” he said.
He added that “our political relations since 2021 have been very volatile due to excessive interference by some countries in autonomous decisions. We are a sovereign country and our relations have been damaged because other presidents have allowed these excesses. I am not going to allow it. I will be 39 years old, but I know what I have to do and I think about it well. I do not have any type of fear when I make decisions.”
In the midst of this diplomatic storm, in the last few hours, Mexico issued a statement ensuring that Peru had reiterated its commitment to respect the inviolability of its diplomatic headquarters, including the residence where Chávez remains. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs that, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Peruvian government has confirmed that it will respect the immunities of Mexico in that country, including the inviolability of its properties in Lima, within which the official residence is located, as well as its assets and archive,” the statement said.
