The president of the government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, recalled that he does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as president elected in the elections last year, but insisted that international law must be respected to find a solution to the situation between the US and Venezuela.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, asked this Sunday that spaces be opened for dialogue and respect for international law in the face of the situation between the United States and Venezuela, after Donald Trump’s administration deployed military teams in the Caribbean since last August to fight against drug trafficking.

“We have always had the same position in each of the conflicts and that is to open spaces for dialogue that respect international law and that is what we also ask for on this issue,” Sánchez said after being consulted at a press conference after the G20 summit.

Pedro Sánchez also recalled that Spain does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as elected president and stressed that this condition “is not an obstacle to not respecting international law.”

«Clearly we have not recognized the electoral result and we do not recognize President Maduro as the president who has had the majority support of the Venezuelan people in the last elections. But that does not prevent international law from being respected and channels of dialogue being found that can resolve this crisis in a peaceful manner,” Sánchez added.

The minister for DefenseVladimir Padrino López, stated that “no air-naval deployment, no matter how powerful it may be created, and no matter how intimidating it may pretend to be” will be able to take away the independence of the Venezuelan people, nor of the peoples of the Caribbean or Latin America.

The soldier condemned the military exercises that the United States is carrying out in Trinidad and Tobago, a few meters from Venezuela, and affirmed that they are a threat to national and regional sovereignty. He insisted that US actions “are not innocent maneuvers”
