Emapa has 130,000 tons of wheat to guarantee the price of bread, a figure that covers only 15% of internal demand

Emapa has 130,000 tons of wheat to guarantee the price of bread, a figure that covers only 15% of internal demand

An expanded one that will take place this Monday afternoon will define the measures that the bakery sector will take in the face of the increase in the price of flour. In less than two weeks the cost of food supplies went from costing Bs 170 per quintal (qq) to Bs 280. Given this situation, the Government assured that it has 130,000 tons of wheat to guarantee the supply of flour.

However, the bakery sector assured that the national demand reaches 850,000 tons per year.

This data was highlighted by the Federation of Artisan Bakers of La Paz, after the Food Production Support Company (Emapa) indicated that it has enough wheat to guarantee the internal demand for wheat, an essential grain for the production of flour.

“Again, we ratify the Bolivian people that Emapa has 130,000 tons of wheat grain that will be transformed into approximately 1,600,000 quintals. The State has foreseen the necessary collection volume to deliver to the bakery sector,” said Franklin Flores, general manager of the Food Production Support Company (Emapa).

Given these statements, Dandy Mallea, executive secretary of the Federation of Artisan Bakers of La Paz, said that the historical demand for wheat reaches 850,000 tons For this reason, he maintained that the figure proposed by Emapa, which only covers 15% of what is required, is ridiculous.

For example, he said that every month 75,000 tons of wheat are needed to supply flour to the bakery sector which has to resort to imports from the Argentine market. But many bakeries cannot acquire the product that is even scarce in Argentina.

This shortage is generated by the war between Ukraine and Russia, two main producers of wheat that stopped producing. This caused the demand for wheat to skyrocket and there is little supply in international markets.

In this scenario, the leader stated that they cannot guarantee the price of bread with current operating costs. Mallea explained that in just two weeks the cost of a quintal of flour (a 50-kilo sack) went from Bs 170 to Bs 280.

Today we woke up with the price at Bs 280 per quintal. It is very difficult to find flour in the market. What the Government says does not make sense, its flour does not supply the market”, assured the leader.

On Monday morning, the Minister of Productive Development and Plural Economy, Néstor Huanca He said that he would meet with the real leaders of the sector in order to guarantee the stability of the price of bread.

He even maintained that there is an agreement signed with the sector to guarantee the price of bread throughout the country.

This agreement is in force with the true leaders of the Confederation of the bakery sector. We are in constant meetings, evaluating the behavior of this price and they are sure that they will permanently supply this product (bread) to the Bolivian population”, said Huanca, according to ABI report.

However, Mallea said that does not guarantee that the price of bread will remain stable for a long time and an expanded among the baker will order the measures that have to be adopted from now on.
