Álex Gonzales: “Dina Boluarte has to answer for the deaths in Puno, there should be no impunity”

Alex Gonzalespresidential candidate and leader of the Green Democratic Party, arrived in Fistthe region that for four months in 2023 protested against Dina Boluarte and where 21 people lost their lives at the hands of state forces.

Gonzales, who is former mayor of the Lima district of San Juan de Lurigancho (2019-2022), maintained that what happened in Puno should not go unpunished and in any case Dina Boluarte must answer to justice for all the deaths during her government.

“There should be no impunity and Dina Boluarte must respond to all deaths in her government for violations of Human Rights. (For) Police and military personnel, there will be no impunity. They will have to be held accountable,” he asserted.

“Puno has been stigmatized. It has been terrified”

During his visit to Puno, the candidate for Pizarro’s seat toured several communities without being kicked out or screwed up, unlike what happened with Phillip Butters in October. Asked if he felt free to walk through Puno without anyone questioning him, he responded in a peculiar way.

“Puno has been stigmatized. They have terrified it. The centralism Lima looks with disdain at this great region that is the origin of our culture. There is racism and classism that must be banished in today’s Peru. Puno should not be judged by the latest protests. Puno is a town of brave people who demand their demands and rights on foot. These are the accumulated frustrations because we have a Lima centralism that has lived with its back turned,” he said.

In favor of taking the military to the streets

Gonzales maintained that the port of Corío (Islay, Arequipa) could give Puno a development opportunity because it would open a market of 42 countries across the Pacific. He believes that a train should be promoted between Cusco and Puno. He was in favor of a new Constitution. He also proposed that contracts with mining companies be readjusted.

Furthermore, he believes that one of the ways to combat crime is by putting soldiers and police on the streets and applying drastic laws.
