THE preventive detention of former president Jair Bolsonaro was held in compliance with the decision of the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, due to the call for a vigil, this Saturday (22), close to the residence where the former president is under house arrest.
According to Moraes, the meeting could cause turmoil and even facilitate “a possible escape attempt by the defendant.”
The STF minister also states that the Integrated Monitoring Integration Center of the Federal District reported the occurrence of a violation of Bolsonaro’s electronic monitoring equipment in the early hours of this Saturday: “The information confirms the condemned man’s intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape, facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.”
In the decision, Moraes also determines that a custody hearing be held this Sunday (23)by videoconference, at the Regional Superintendency of the Federal Police in the Federal District, in addition to providing full-time medical care to the defendant.
The decision also states that all visits must be previously authorized by the STF, with the exception of lawyers and the medical team that monitors the defendant’s health treatment.
The document also cites as an argument for the possibility of Bolsonaro’s escape attempt, “information that the person convicted in the same criminal action, Alexandre Rodrigues Ramagem, escaped from the country with the purpose of evading the application of criminal law, and is currently in the city of Miami, in the United States”.
It is also mentioned in the decision that this Friday (21) Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) called, via social media, a prayer vigil near the house where Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August 4th.
Sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison in the criminal action of Core 1 of the coup plot, Bolsonaro and the other defendants could have their sentences carried out in the coming weeks.
Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August 4, determined after failure to comply with precautionary measures already established by the STF. He was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and was prohibited from accessing embassies and consulates, from maintaining contact with ambassadors and foreign authorities and from using social networks, directly or indirectly, including through third parties.
