The president of the Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations (SAC), Lady Camones, spoke today in favor of law enforcement entering the residence of the Mexican embassy where she is holed up. Betssy Chavezformer prime minister of the coup plotter Pedro Castillo, and proceed to his capture as ordered by the Judiciary.
Judge Juan Carlos Checkley, as is known, revoked the appearance measure with restrictions that was imposed some time ago on Chávez Chino and ordered 5 months of preventive detention against him; Likewise, he ordered his capture at the international level.
“The government has to respect the sovereignty and autonomy of our country. In this case, I repeat, it is not about political persecution, it is not due to political persecution, it is immersed in an investigation process that, due to its powers, is being carried out by the Public Ministry and the Judiciary,” he stressed.
In statements to the press, the Alliance for Progress legislator said that “we must make it clear to the population that Betssy Chávez is not politically persecuted.”
“The government has to make the decisions so that she submits to justice,” he said, and when asked if this measure could be implemented using force he responded: “In my opinion, yes.”
“A precedent must be set so that any politician in Peru does not claim that there is political persecution when it is really about the possible commission of crimes,” added Camones, while supporting an eventual entry of the public force into the residence of the Mexican embassy where Pedro Castillo’s former minister has been since last November 3.
“We already have people from other countries, we must respect the autonomy and sovereignty of our country,” he stressed, alluding to what happened on April 5, 2024 when Ecuadorian police and military forces entered the Mexican embassy in Quito to capture the former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas, sentenced for corruption cases and who had remained in said headquarters since December 2023.
Camones avoided commenting on whether or not the court order is late, but he did note that what “must be demanded is that the accused Betsy Chávez be brought to justice.”
At another time, he commented on what Pedro Castillo said in the context of the oral trial against him where he said that Congresswoman María del Carmen Alva had asked him for two ministries in exchange for helping him stay in power.
“At this moment Pedro Castillo is using a strategy to smear all the congressmen, he is wanting to delay the processes using these types of situations and he is going to begin, I have no doubt, to invent some type of possible crimes that some congressmen could have committed; I am not saying that they have not occurred, but I think it is a strategy,” he added.
