The US warns about risks in Maiquetía airspace due to increased military activity

The US says that some civil flights reported navigation failures while crossing Venezuelan airspace, with effects that persisted during the rest of the journey

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning to air operators about potential risks when flying in the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (SVZM FIR), due to the “worsening security situation and increased military activity in or around Venezuela.”

He urged US airlines and pilots to exercise extreme caution at all altitudes, as they consider that they can “represent a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflight, arrivals or departures, and with aircraft on the ground.”

The United States Aviation specified that since September 2025, interference has been recorded with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the airspace controlled by Maiquetía. They assured that some civil flights reported persistent effects, even after leaving the area; which, they say, can compromise essential communication, navigation, surveillance and security systems.

They added that the interference, which is caused by jammers and GNSS signal spoofing devices, can affect aircraft up to 250 nautical miles around (just over 460 kilometers).

Military mobilization

After Donald Trump’s administration deployed military equipment to the Caribbean to fight drug trafficking, Venezuela also began to carry out military exercises in the national territory to defend the nation from a possible attack by the United States, since they believe that North America is really seeking a regime change.

The US maintains that “although Venezuela has at no time expressed the intention of targeting civil aviation,” it has advanced combat aircraft, anti-aircraft systems and Portable Air Defense Systems, “capable of reaching the altitudes at which commercial aviation is developed.”

The US agency affirmed that it will maintain surveillance over the situation and make the necessary adjustments to “safeguard United States civil aviation” while the increase in tensions and military activities in Venezuela and its surroundings persists.

Tensions between the US and Venezuela remain tense, as Nicolás Maduro claims that the Trump administration intends to invade the country to seize the nation’s resources, while the US military forces assure that their operation is against drug trafficking that leaves from the south towards their territory.

To date, the United States has destroyed more than 20 boats that were allegedly transporting drugs. More than 80 people have died in these operations.
