More than 1,500 Cuban migrants have been deported to the island this year

Cuba receives the seventh flight of deported migrants from the US under the Trump administration

The figure of Cuban irregular migrants That have been deported to the island so far in 2025 exceeded 1,500 this Thursday, the majority from the United States.

That number was reached with the arrival yesterday of a flight with 139 people repatriated by Washington “in compliance with bilateral immigration agreements,” according to press reports.

This is the eleventh air operation recorded so far this year from US territory. In it, 109 men and 39 women were returned, the newspaper detailed Granma.

One of the returned people “was detained because he was on parole at the time of illegally leaving the country,” added the brief official note.

According to the authorities’ count, so far there are 52 returns of Cuban migrants from different nations in the region this year. In these, a total of 1,535 people have been repatriated to the island.

Although the note does not detail the exact origin of these people, already last September About a thousand had been reported to have been returned at that time from the US.

As is usual in these statements, the Government of Cuba emphasized “its commitment to regular, safe and orderly migration,” while warning about the danger and life-threatening conditions that illegal departures from the country represent.

The case of the United States

The Governments of Cuba and the US have a bilateral agreement so that all migrants who arrive by sea to US territory are deported to the island, remember EFE.

On the other hand, deportation flights that had been suspended since 2020 were resumed at the end of April 2023, mainly for Cubans considered “inadmissible” after being detained on the border with Mexico.

However, in the midst of its current offensive against migrants, the Trump Administration has sent Cubans to other countries who, according to various reports, Havana has not agreed to receive. The reason for such a refusal would be the criminal history in the US of those deported migrants.

The US deports Cubans with criminal records to Mexico

According to data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), during the 2024 fiscal period, a total of 217,615 Cubans arrived in that country, bringing the figure for the last four years to more than 860,000, the Spanish media reports.

In recent years, Cuba has registered an unprecedented migratory exodus due to the serious economic crisis it is suffering, with shortages of food, medicine and fuel, rampant inflation, frequent and prolonged power outages and a partial dollarization of the economy.
