The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced, this Thursday (20), the removal of the 40% import tariff on certain Brazilian products. The list released by the White House includes products such as coffee, tea, tropical fruits and fruit juices, cocoa and spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and beef.
In the executive order published by the US Presidency, Trump says that the decision was taken after a telephone conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva“during which we agreed to begin negotiations to address the issues identified in Executive Order 14,323.” According to the publication, these negotiations are still ongoing.
Furthermore, additional information and recommendations from various authorities that have been monitoring the circumstances relating to the state of emergency declared in Executive Decree 14,323 were considered. SAccording to the recommendations received by Trump, “certain agricultural imports from Brazil should no longer be subject to the additional 40% rate imposed by Executive Decree 14,323, because, among other relevant considerations, there has been initial progress in negotiations with the Government of Brazil”, specifies the official publication.
The White House announced, in a attachmentthe list of products that are no longer affected by the 40% rate. “Specifically, I have determined that certain agricultural products will not be subject to the additional tax rate ad valorem imposed by Executive Decree 14,323″, says the text, adding that, in Trump’s understanding, “these modifications are necessary and appropriate to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Decree 14,323”.
