The Plenary Session of Congress approved in the first vote the ruling that creates the National University of Pataz (UNP) in La Libertad, an initiative supported by bills 8197/2023-CR and 10856/2024-CR.
The proposal obtained 72 votes in favor, 7 against and 7 abstentions, and will be put to a second vote in seven daysin accordance with the Regulations of Parliament.
The initiative, promoted by Congressman Américo Gonza, states that the new house of studies have faculties aligned with local and national labor demand. Among them stand out Health Sciences – with careers such as Medicine, Nursing, Obstetrics and Medical Technology -, Engineering – with specialties in Mining, Environmental, Civil, Agronomy and Agriculture – and Business Sciences, which will include Administration, Accounting and Economics.
During the debate, the president of the Education Commission, Segundo Montalvo, maintained that the creation of the UNP will allow expand access to higher education for more than 1,500 young people who graduate from secondary school in the province each year, many of whom cannot continue their studies due to economic and geographical barriers.
The project plans to finance the implementation of the university with its own resources, mining canons and royalties, as well as funds managed with various State entities.
Other congressmen were against taking into account the situation of several national universities that demand a greater budget and implementation.
