“Ele [Trump] he is invited to come to Brazil whenever he wants, and I hope to be invited to go to Washington to resolve any commercial or political disputes between Brazil and the USA”, he added.
Lula recorded the video alongside Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad in São Paulo, shortly before leaving for South Africa, where he will participate in the G20 Summit. The president made a point of thanking Trump, albeit partially, and asked that countries reach complete trade understanding.
“I will thank you only partially, because I will thank you completely when everything is fully agreed between us.”
Partial suspension
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced, this Thursday (20), the removal of the 40% import tariff on certain Brazilian products. The list released by the White House includes products such as coffee, tea, tropical fruits and fruit juices, cocoa and spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and beef.
In the executive order published by the US Presidency, Trump says that the decision was made after a telephone conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “during which we agreed to begin negotiations to address the issues identified in Executive Decree 14,323.” According to the publication, these negotiations are still ongoing.
Itamaraty
The Brazilian government issued a statement on Thursday night stating that it “welcomed the decision of the United States government to revoke the 40% additional tariff on a series of agricultural products imported from Brazil”.
The government note, published by Itamaraty, also mentions that President Donald Trump “received recommendations from senior officials in his government that certain agricultural imports from Brazil should no longer be subject to the 40% tariff due to the ‘initial progress in negotiations’ with the Brazilian government”.
The measure taken by the US is retroactive to November 13, the same date as the last meeting between Minister Mauro Vieira and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in Washington. On that occasion, they discussed the progress of negotiations to reduce tariffs.
Brazil also makes itself available to maintain dialogue with the Trump administration to “resolve issues between the two countries, in line with the 201-year tradition of excellent diplomatic relations.
