Persists "worrying" disrespect to those of DD. H H. in Nicaragua while “serious impunity” prevails

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) presented an update on the human rights situation “in the context of impunity” that the country is experiencing under the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. The organization reiterated the need to create an oversight mechanism to achieve justice and reparation for the victims.

The Cenidh addressed the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) through the virtual conference that took place on March 14. The regional entity considers it necessary to adopt extraordinary verification and accountability mechanisms denouncing the situation of general repression and arbitrary imprisonment experienced by opponents.

The deputy representative for Latin America of the United Nations Organization (UN), Andrés Sánchez, presented an oral update on the situation in the country to the IACHR denouncing that “in a report presented by the Commission, it was recommended to the State of Nicaragua that design or apply an accountability action plan and measures that guarantee access to justice and reparation. Accountability is at the core of the rule of law, therefore the government must be held accountable for the serious violations committed since 2018.”

Sánchez highlighted the situation of political prisoners who have been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and disqualified from holding public office only for “exercising their fundamental rights.” He added that the “conduct of justice operators following the government narrative and neglecting their duty to comply with the Law is a definitive factor in maintaining this impunity.”

The UN insists that the State of Nicaragua has the obligation to “guarantee the rights to justice, truth and reparation to the victims in the search for non-repetition, we will persist in this demand, the responsibility of the material actors of the serious crimes committed must be determined,” said the representative.

For its part, the IACHR lamented that the regime maintains a “worrying absence” in terms of human rights, considering Daniel Ortega’s denial of the “serious violation of rights.” The defense organizations had extended their invitation to the Nicaraguan dictatorship.

The president of the Cenidh, Vilma Núñez, pointed out that in the situation of political prisoners there is “serious impunity. Everything is armed to prevent the truth of what is happening from being known and guaranteeing impunity is what they want,” said the defender.

The petitioner organizations, the Center for Civil and Political Rights (CCPR), the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH), the Autonomous Women’s Movement (MAM), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Institute on Race, Equality.
