Ukrainian President Zelensky will address the US Congress on Wednesday

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky will deliver a virtual address to the US Congress on Wednesday, in the midst of intense Russian bombing against his countryDemocratic leaders in both chambers reported Monday.

“We hope to have the privilege of hosting President Zelensky’s address to the House of Representatives and the Senate and to broadcast our support for the people of Ukraine as they bravely defend democracyHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her House counterpart Chuck Schumer said in a joint letter to lawmakers.

The announcement comes as Ukraine and Russia, two weeks after the invasion launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin, launched a new round of negotiationsamid Russian airstrikes on the capital, Kiev, and in a pro-Russian breakaway region to the east.

Ukraine said that during the talks it will demand “peace, an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops.”

Pelosi and Schumer announced that Zelensky’s virtual speech It will start on Wednesday at 09:00 local time (13:00 GMT).

“Congress remains steadfast in its commitment to support Ukraine as it confronts the cruel and Putin’s diabolical aggression, and to pass laws to cripple and isolate the Russian economy, as well as to provide humanitarian, security and economic assistance to Ukraine,” they added.

For weeks, the US Congress, known for bickering between parties, has shown a united front in response to Moscow and has called on President Joe Biden to harden his tone.

In Canada Anthony Rota, Speaker of the House of Commons, announced that Zelensky he will also address the Ottawa House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Zelensky already addressed the British Parliament a few days ago. Invoking Winston Churchill, wearing a khaki t-shirt and sitting near a ukrainian flagcalled for more support for his country after the Russian invasion and said they “will fight to the end.”

On March 5, he spoke to more than a hundred US congressmen by videoconference to ask for a tightening of economic sanctions against Russia.

A few days later, the congressmen adopted the disbursement of 14,000 million dollars (€12.75 billion) to help Kiev protect its power grid, fight cyberattacks and equip itself with defensive weapons.
