Joel Santos promises a report on the blackout next week

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, reported this Thursday that the technical report about him general blackout which was recorded in the country last Tuesday, November 11, it will be delivered next week, ensuring that the document will be “detailed, accurate and rigorous, just as citizens demand.”

The official acknowledged that the population’s expectation was to receive detailed explanations shortly after the event, even “an hour and a half later,” but recalled that it is a complex system that requires deep investigation.

“One has to worry about developing a detailed report. Spain had a general blackout and you have not yet delivered your report; Chile also had another and has not delivered it either. The New York blackout took a year to have a final report. We will be delivering it in a week and a half, meeting the expectations of the population,” he assured.

Demand growth and system challenges

During his intervention in the activity called “Dialogues for development: climate change and energy 2025“, the minister explained the rapid growth of energy sector in it countryhighlighting that electricity demand continues to increase.

He also explained that the system faces challenges associated with climate changethe variability of demand and the need for greater coordination between all actors in the sector.

Santos stressed that, to sustain the economic development and attract investments high added value, such as the technology and semiconductor industries, the country must significantly increase its generation capacity, including a robust cold reserve that guarantees immediately available energy for new projects.

Investments and system transformation

The minister highlighted the progress in the diversification of the energy matrix, which went from 88% dependence on oil in 2000 to a much more balanced system, with 25% renewable energies at the end of this year.

Santos reported that, to respond to the growing demand, the Government foresees the incorporation of more than 2,300 thermal megawatts in the next three yearswhich would increase the installed capacity by 54%.

He indicated that this will be added 555 megawatts of renewable energypractically doubling the current installation in this segment to 2028.

In matters of transmissionpointed out that they are projected investments for 450 million dollars during the next three yearsintended to strengthen lines, substations and transformers, which Santos described as “the arteries of the electrical system.”

Called to resume the Electric Pact

The minister also considered it necessary that the country resume the Electric Pact and check the Law 125-01stating that “the system of 2001 is not the system of 2025” and that a updated legal framework that reflects the current complexity and size of the sector.

He official expressed that the challenge of State and of private sector is to respond ever faster to a “more informed and shorter fuse” population, which demands a reliable electrical service and immediate solutions to failures.

Santos spoke at the meeting “Dialogues for development: climate change and energy 2025“, where experts and actors of the energy sector addressed the challenges and opportunities of country in this matter.

The day was organized by the Alumni Association of the Mother and Teacher Foundation from the Pontifical Catholic Mother and Teacher University (Pucmm).

During the event, the reverend father doctor Secilio Espinalrector of the Pucmmoffered the welcome words.

At this meeting there were three panels and two exhibitions, in which the specialists involved offered a public perspective of the electrical sectorthe opportunities and investment in the private sectorand the vulnerabilities, natural threats and resilience strategies against the climate change.
