The president of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou discussed this Monday with several trade unionists, including the president of the ANCAP Federation (Fancap), Gerardo Rodríguez, about the government’s decision to associate a private company with the business of the state oil company.

“It has been giving a deficit for years”, was one of the first things that President Lacalle Pou responded to the demands of the workers. “They let a furnace rot, I never saw you raise your voice, you never spoke”pointed out in reference to the oven bought during the governments of the Broad Front that was never installed.

Rodriguez pointed out that in Lavalleja and Paysandú there is “13% unemployment, well above the average in the country” and criticized that Uruguay do not appeal to “public investment” as “all countries” are doing, “to reactivate the economy”. “Investment in portland is essential”assured the president of Fancap.

The crossing occurred during the opening ceremony of a new premises of the Technological University (UTEC). The trade unionist stated that “the oven is not rotten.” “If you want us to be able to compete with a company that has just set up with cutting-edge technology, you have to make the investments”, he pointed. “Install that oven in Paysandú employs a thousand workers and that allows us to lower the cost of productionRodriguez explained.

Then, another interlocutor interrupted the conversation and raised with Lacalle Pou the possibility of send “a law” to Parliament to “discuss” the course of portland in ANCAP, and that “it is not in this way that they are doing it”.

“This way is legal and it is constitutional,” the president replied.

“We are not going to privatize”, I assure you. “We want them to be competitive,” she said, stating that workers “they are not going to lose their job” because “they are public officials.”
