The Venezuelan poet, translator and artist Verónica Jaffé won the XXV Casa de América Prize for American Poetry in Madrid for her book The animal if poem. The jury highlighted the intellectual depth of the collection of poems, selected from among 833 works from 35 countries.
The cultural institution reported that the jury He rewarded the work for its “great intellectual and philosophical potential.” According to the note released by Casa de Américathe work proposes a network of quotes that works like “a game of mirrors”, from which the poems dialogue with contemporary authors.
Jaffé Carbonell (Caracas, 1957) thus becomes the second Venezuelan author to receive this recognitionafter Yolanda Pantin in 2017. The award includes 5,000 euros and the publication of the book by Editorial Visor Libros.
Literary and artistic career
The author has developed a work that includes poetry, essays and translation. Among his essay books, The Impossible Story stands out: Receptional analysis of Venezuelan short stories between 1970-1980 (1991), Metaphors and translation or translation as metaphor (2004) and Poesía, Translation, Libertad (2024).
In poetry he has published titles such as The art of loss (1991), The long journey home (1994), Ismena’s version (2000), On translations: Poems 2000-2008 (2010), Friedrich Hölderlin: Hesperian songs (2016), Of the metaphor, fluid: Poems 2009-2014 (2019) and Fugaz lagartija: Poems 2014-2018 (2024).
As a translator she has worked on texts by Gottfried Benn, Else Lasker-Schüler, Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann. In the field of visual arts he has exhibited at the Latin American Institute of Vienna and in several galleries in Caracas.
833 poetry collections from 35 countries were submitted to this twenty-fifth edition of the award. The largest participation came from Argentina (166 works), followed by Colombia (110), Mexico (100), Spain (98), Chile (54) and Peru (50), according to EFE, the agency responsible for the original information.
