Flup takes place between the 19th and 23rd and from the 27th to the 30th of November, at the Madureira Viaduct, in the north of the city. The event also seeks to promote meetings between literary personalities and society in peripheral areas of the capital.

The writer Conceição Evaristo, creator of the concept of “Writing”, which transforms individual experiences into collective narratives of the Afro-Brazilian community, will be honored in the edition. This is the first time that Flup pays tribute to a writer during his lifetime.

Flup also presents an exhibition about the life, work and legacy of the anti-colonial and anti-racist activist and intellectual, Frantz Fanon. Afro-Caribbean psychiatrist and political philosopher who, in his works, criticized racist systems, the European bourgeoisie and the domination of colonial thought.

At the table The Dream of Our Heroes, which We Need to Keep Alive, Conceição Evaristo and Mireille Fanon, the philosopher’s daughter, debate the trajectory of social struggles in Brazil and the Caribbean and the leaders of these movements.

The Black Codes intervention is inspired by the book The Wretched of the Earthby Fanon, for the creation of digital works, displayed on LED screens during the party. The exhibition is a partnership between the Olabi organization and the artists Guilherme Bretas, Ilka Cyana, Poliana Feulo and Walter Mauro, who use artificial intelligence resources and other video and image generation technologies.

“Fanon’s thinking is so up-to-date and urgent, including a discussion about technology”, says the curator of the intervention and co-executive director of Olabi, Silvana Bahia.

She highlights that the idea of decolonizing, of having a colonized person and the impacts that this racist, misogynistic structure has on people’s lives are some of the current aspects of Fanon’s works discussed in the intervention, using digital tools.

Social value

With 12 years of history in Rio de Janeiro, Flup has already visited Morro dos Prazeres, Vigário Geral, Mangueira, Babilônia, Vidigal, Cidade de Deus, Maré, Biblioteca Parque, Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), in Praça Mauá, and Morro da Providência, promoting social integration through cultural experiences.

The work brought recognition in several sectors, such as awards from the newspaper O Globo in 2012, the Awards Excellence, from the London Book Fair, Instituto Pró-Livro in 2016, and the Jabuti award in the Promotion of Reading category in 2020. In 2023, the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro declared Flup intangible heritage.
