President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva refuted this Tuesday (18) a statement made by the German Prime Minister, Friedrich Merzon November 13th, which made a derogatory comparison of Belém (PA), with Berlin, the capital of Germany.
“Berlin does not offer 10% of the quality that the state of Pará and the city of Belém offer”, stated the Brazilian president during the inauguration ceremony of the Bridge that connects Xambioá (TO) to São Geraldo do Araguaia (PA).
The statement came after German Chancellor Merz publicly declared that no one from his team wanted to stay in Belém for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), because Berlin is a very beautiful city.
President Lula recalled in a speech that when he decided to hold the COP in Pará, many complained and said it should be in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. They complained about many things like the price of soft drinks, but they never complained about the price of water at an international airport.

When citing Friedrich Merz’s statement, the Brazilian president reinforced that there was a lack of knowledge on the part of visitors.
“He, in fact, should have gone to a bar in Pará. He, in fact, should have danced in Pará. He should have tried the cuisine of Pará. Because he would realize that Berlin does not offer him 10% of the quality that the state of Pará, the city of Belém, offers”, he concluded.
