Mexico rejects any possibility of US military intervention in its territory

“I have told him on all occasions (to Trump) that we can collaborate, that they can help us with the information they have, but that we operate in our territory, that we we do not accept intervention from any foreign government«the president pointed out bluntly during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum also explained that the issue is not new and that the US president has made similar suggestions in several previous conversations.

«I have mentioned it many times in the conversations (conversations) I have had with President Trump over the phone. He has suggested on several occasions or said “we offer you the military intervention of the United States in Mexico that you need to combat criminal groups,” he noted.

However, he reiterated that both the US president and officials and legislators, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently visited Mexico, have been informed of the Mexican position.

“They have understood, so much so, that the understanding we have with them is one of collaboration and coordination and the first points are very clear: respect for sovereignty, respect for our territoriality and that there is collaboration and coordination without subordination,” he stated.

He recalled that, even after these conversations, the US Government issued a statement in which it was clear that they would only intervene if Mexico requested it.

«We are not going to ask for it. And we are not going to ask for it because we do not want interventions from any foreign government,” he noted.

Sheinbaum’s statements come a day after Donald Trump stated that he is not “happy” with Mexico for the fight against drug trafficking and said that he does not rule out an attack against the cartels that operate on both sides of the border.

Since September, the US Army has destroyed around twenty boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, near Venezuela and Colombia, extrajudicially killing more than 70 people, whom it describes as “narcoterrorists.”

In recent months, conservative sectors in the United States have pushed for a more aggressive response against drug trafficking, while Mexico insists that bilateral cooperation must focus on intelligence exchange, reduction of arms trafficking and absolute respect for sovereignty.
