Washington joined the alert of the Cuban Prisons Documentation Center about the serious condition of Yosvany Rosell García Caso.
MADRID, Spain.- The United States Embassy in Havana condemned this Monday the “abuses and mistreatment” suffered by political prisoners in Cuban prisons, in a message posted in X in response to an alert issued days ago by the Cuban Prison Documentation Center (CDPC).
In its public statement, the diplomatic headquarters described as “alarming” the situation of 9/11 protester Yosvany Rosell García Caso, who remains on hunger strike in the Cuba Sí prison, in Holguín. According to the message, the inmate’s protest constitutes a complaint against “the constant abuses” within the prison system. The Embassy added that it joins the demands for the release of all people imprisoned for political reasons.
Washington’s reaction came after a publication by the CDPC, which last week issued an urgent alert about the opponent’s deteriorating health. According to the organization, Rosell García had then been on a hunger strike for 17 days in protest and to demand his freedom and that of other prisoners for political reasons in Cuba.
The CDPC indicated that relatives were able to visit him when he had gone 12 days without eating food. His wife, Mailín Rodríguez Sánchez, stated in a video posted on Facebook that the political prisoner “has his skin stuck to his bone,” a description that reflects the serious physical condition he was in during the encounter.
The situation of Rosell Garcia It occurs in a prison context marked by sustained complaints of human rights violations. A recent report by Prisoners Defenders indicates that at the end of October 2025 there were 1,179 political prisoners on the island.
The organization warns that Cuban prisons have overcrowding, outbreaks of diseases such as dengue, tuberculosis, Oropouche fever and chikungunya, as well as episodes of mistreatment, torture and denial of adequate medical care.
The magazine Tense Wings has further documented that at least a dozen political prisoners are on hunger strike in different prisons, among them Yosvany Rosell García himself. Case held in the Cuba Sí prison, in Holguín.
On several occasions Cubalex has explained that the hunger strike is a challenge within the prison environment, highlighting its recognition as a form of legitimate protest at an international level, although in contrast it is classified as a serious infraction according to Cuban prison laws.
The organization insists that, despite the limitations imposed at the local level, the presentation of requests for parole and the activation of protection processes are suggested as strategies to protect the rights of prisoners, emphasizing the importance of considering the legal and social impact, the irreversibility of violations and the vulnerability of the affected people.
Among the opponents and political prisoners who carried out hunger strikes last year were the artivist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Guillermo “Coco” FariñasJosé Daniel Ferrer and several of those imprisoned by 11J.
