Dominican organizations reject US naval deployment in the Caribbean

Political, social and cultural organizations from the Dominican Republic began this Saturday the International Week “No to the War against Venezuela” with a massive “Stop No to War”. From the emblematic Independence Park of Santo Domingo, the unanimous cry was the absolute rejection of the United States naval deployment in Caribbean waters and the defense of Venezuelan sovereignty, reported the portal Telesur.

The mobilization, which brought together social movements, popular organizations and voices of Our America, took place near the historic park where the remains of the Fathers of the Nation rest. The participants distributed a manifesto denouncing that the Southern Command offensive is not aimed at fighting drug trafficking, but rather at obtaining control of the vast wealth of Venezuela and other strategic resources in the region.

During the “No War Stop”, a flyer was distributed that expressed the firm rejection of the deployment of aircraft carriers, destroyers, combat aircraft and nuclear submarines that the US military apparatus has intensified in the waters near Venezuela. These maneuvers, according to the statement, also threaten Colombia and reinforce the military presence throughout the Caribbean.

The activists, when referring to the position of the Dominican Government, pointed out that the current administration “betrays national sovereignty” by supporting the warlike and interventionist policy of the United States. This position of complicity has occurred amid complaints that armed operations in national waters have already caused the death of fishermen in the region, including a Dominican citizen from Pedernales.

The manifesto that called for mobilization was delivered to pedestrians and drivers in a space loaded with independence symbolism. In a speech to the press, the organizers categorically stated that “the peace of the people cannot be conditioned by military or imperialist interests.” And they stated: “defending the sovereignty of Venezuela is defending the peace of all of Our America.”
