Cane-based repellents: new initiative against arboviruses in Cuba

In the midst of the epidemiological crisis in Cuba, more than 30% of the population has been infected with dengue and/or chikungunya.

LIMA, Peru – Given the serious epidemiological crisis in Cuba, caused mainly by vectors such as mosquitoes, the regime’s pharmaceutical companies announced the production of repellents based on cane santa.

a report of the state telecenter Granma reports that production will be carried out by the Medilip Pharmaceutical Laboratory Company in collaboration with the Pharmacy and Optical Company of that province.

“The production of repellents against mosquitoes and gnats began, intended to protect the population and support vector control actions,” says the official press.

According to the note, the product will be 100% natural based on two ingredients: Neem tincture and Holy Cane. Likewise, the instructions detail that the repellent is applied to the skin and that its use in children under three years of age is not recommended.

The images shared on Facebook by the telecenter suggest that a liter of repellent will cost about 200 Cuban pesos (CUP), with smaller presentations at 40 CUP.

30% of the Cuban population has been infected

The national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) of Cuba, Francisco Durán García, recognized this Wednesday that more than 30% of the Cuban population has been infected with dengue and/or chikungunya, in a context that he described as “acute.”

At the same time, the official denied that 90% of the country’s inhabitants have been infected with any of the arboviruses, but did not offer absolute figures or a detailed breakdown by disease.

Durán also stated that Cuba faces “a complex epidemiological scenario due to the circulation of arboviruses such as dengue and chikungunya, although with a decreasing trend.” He clarified that “this is not a viral influenza or a different disease,” but rather known diseases that have spread throughout the country.

Despite the supposed “decreasing trend,” Durán himself confirmed dengue transmission in 14 provinces, with “greater complexity” in Havana, Matanzas and Ciego de Ávila. Regarding chikungunya, also present in 14 provinces, he pointed out that 98.5% of the cases are concentrated in Matanzas, Havana, Camagüey, Cienfuegos, Artemisa and Villa Clara, and pointed out Matanzas as the “most complicated” territory.

That is, while the authorities repeat the containment discourse, they admit that the virus has spread to almost the entire country and that around a third of the population has already fallen ill with arboviruses such as chikungunya.
