The new General Water Law, proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, will be approved in Congress before the end of the ordinary period, regardless of the campaign that the PAN has started against the legislation, Morena senators warned.
This is in reference to the fact that legislators blue and whitelike Mario Vázquez, are calling on agricultural producers to demonstrate, arguing that the proposed law will affect their rights.
The PAN member was yesterday in a community in Namiquipa, in Chihuahua, where he asked farmers and ranchers to pressure Morena legislators so that this initiative is not approved, “since it is a blow to the countryside, which criminalizes producers.”
In this regard, Morenoist senator Saúl Monreal stated that this is false, since the initiative proposes stopping the privatization of water and guaranteeing the human right to sufficient and healthy access to the vital liquid for personal and domestic consumption.
He acknowledged that for years it has not been possible to legislate in the face of vested interests on this issue, but this time it must be approved. What bothers the PAN members, he said, “is that it is proposed to organize the concessions, prohibit the sale and purchase of these between individuals, strengthen the State’s stewardship over water and eliminate the commercialization of that resource.”
A new legal framework is proposed, he stressed, that establishes that water is a resource of the nation and not a commodity.
For this reason, the capacity of the National Water Commission (Conagua) to manage and regulate the resource is strengthened, as well as the prohibition of changes in land use without federal authorization.
For his part, PT senator Gonzalo Yáñez explained that the presidential initiative is being analyzed in the Chamber of Deputies, which is the one of origin, and he trusts that it will be approved this month, in order to give time for the Senate to vote on it before December 15 when the work concludes.
