This Saturday, opposition leader María Corina Machado issued a message addressed to both Venezuelans and civil and military officials who still carry out orders from the government of Nicolás Maduro.
Machado stated that “the roar of this land that demands freedom grows and resonates inside and outside the country.” He highlighted that 30 million Venezuelans face a “criminal regime that is on its way out,” and accused it of keeping the population and political prisoners “hostage.”
In his opinion, family separation, persecution and hunger are part of a deliberate policy of the ruling party. The leader mentioned the case of Lewis Mendoza, allegedly “kidnapped in the state of Trujillo,” and referred to her daughter’s testimony as a reflection of national suffering. “That cry is the pain of all of Venezuela,” he stated.
Machado questioned government officials and wondered if they can “sleep in peace” after participating in acts of repression and warned that their decisions “will echo every night” in their consciences.
“Put down your weapons,” he insisted, asking them not to attack the Venezuelan people again and assured that the decisive hour is “imminent.” “The position that each one assumes will mark their life forever.”
He said that history, the law and the people will be judges and reiterated that the political transition “is already underway,” which is why he asked the security forces to join what he describes as an irreversible process.
“Accompany the people and become heroes, not shames for your families,” he expressed.
