Closing arguments in Pedro Castillo’s trial

Closing arguments in Pedro Castillo's trial

This Friday the closing arguments will be held in the oral trial against the former coup president Pedro Castillofor him coup d’état which he perpetrated in 2022.

The hearing is carried out by the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court. The former president is present at the session, as well as former ministers Willy Huerta and Aníbal Torres.

The Prosecutor’s Office requests 34 years in prison against Pedro Castillo for the failed coup d’état of December 7, 2022.

During the hearing, the public attorney assigned to Castillo, who has refused to have a lawyer, offers his arguments in defense of the former president.

In addition to Pedro Castillo, the Prosecutor’s Office has accused six people for their alleged participation in the attempted coup d’état of December 7, 2022. Among them are three former ministers: Betssy Chávez, who was president of the Council of Ministers; Aníbal Torres, head of the Advisory Cabinet; and Willy Huerta, Minister of the Interior. Three senior police officers are also involved: Manuel Lozada, head of the Lima Police Region; Justo Venero, head of the Special Services Unit; and Eder Infanzón, lieutenant of the National Police. For all of them, the Prosecutor’s Office has requested sentences ranging between 15 and 25 years in prison, depending on whether they are charged with the crime of rebellion or, failing that, conspiracy to rebel.

In the case of Betssy Chávez, the sentence requested for rebellion amounts to 25 years, while for conspiracy it would be just over 11 years. It should be noted that Chávez has requested political asylum in Mexico and has not appeared at the latest hearings, so she could be declared a criminal offender.

The trial is in its final stages, and the sentence is expected to be issued in December 2025.
