The parable of the boy and the chicken that Pedro Castillo Terrones narrated with a twist in July 2021, days before assuming the presidency, was recalled this Friday by the former president’s lawyer during the hearing in which the lawyer supported his closing argument in the oral trial for the crime of rebellion for the coup d’état of December 2022.
Ricardo Hernández Medina presented his arguments in which he tried to refute the prosecutor’s accusation against his client when in the final part of his argument he revived Castillo’s story to address the judges in the courtroom.
“There was a story that spreads, that everyone knows and that Mr. Pedro Castillo said it. You now have the chicken in your hands. Either you hand him over alive or you hand him over dead, or you acquit him or you condemn him,” said the public defender, addressing the judges, but pointing to the coup plotter.
In his argument, Hernández maintained that the coup plotter never took up arms and that he did not conspire for the crime of which he is accused.
“The prosecution has failed, it failed to prove the rebellion because there was never an uprising; it failed in the conspiracy because there was never an agreement. What my client did was an individual political proclamation, an act of rebellion, because he was cornered by his political adversaries. He never planned with anyone, he did it alone,” the lawyer argued.
THE HISTORY OF CHICKEN
On July 11, 2021, when he had already been proclaimed the winner of the elections, in an activity at the Pharmaceutical Chemical College, Pedro Castillo told this story in a confusing manner as part of his speech. The scene went viral on social networks.
“Once one afternoon I was carrying a child on his back with a chicken and the teacher did not know what he was carrying and he wanted to ask the teacher and he told him I wanted to make him fall and ask him if he was alive or dead if he was dead he showed him the live chicken but if it was alive sorry if it was dead say an older man said that it was dead the teacher’s child handed him over the child he handed him over alive but if he told him that he is very alive the child torres and the neck of the chicken and showed him the neck of the dead chicken he did not know what to do the child was with that trap to do the teacher and the child asks the teacher Louis, teacher, teacher, tell me the chicken that I have in my hands is alive,” Castillo told the story.
