During the demonstration carried out by teachers from the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), a group of Mexico City police officers with anti-riot equipment retreated when they tried to tear down the metal fences of the National Palace, located in Correo Mayor and Moneda. They threw dust from fire extinguishers and a gas that caused irritation in their eyes and itchy throat. There was also pushing, pulling and verbal confrontations.

Before President Claudia Sheinbaum’s lecture, dissident professors constantly hit the enormous three-meter-high steel structures with objects, slaps, fists; and amid slogans of “this fence is going to fall,” they intensified their protest; However, in response, the uniformed officers activated the cylinders to put out fires in order to contain the advance towards the presidential headquarters. The moments of tension lasted for more than 30 minutes.

Coming from Oaxaca, Chiapas, Mexico City and Zacatecas, the teachers arrived at the first square in the city around 4 in the morning. From there they walked towards Pino Suárez, they entered through Venustiano Carranza to Correo Mayor and Moneda; Almost the entire journey was protected by metal structures and police.

Pedro Hernández Morales, leader of the dissident teachers of section 9 in Mexico City, regretted “the repression of the police.”

Protests in other cities

Professors assigned to the CNTE in Zacatecas, Chiapas, Baja California, Oaxaca, Guerrero and Morelos demonstrated in these entities, in the context of the mobilization carried out in the country’s capital.

Thousands of teachers belonging to sections 34 and 58 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), as well as the CNTE and the Teacher Democratic Movement of Zacatecas, held a march through the streets and avenues of the Zacatecan capital to demand that the government of David Monreal fulfill their demands.

In turn, mentors affiliated with section 7 of the SNTE, and also the CNTE, took over three booths on the San Cristóbal-Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Arriaga-Ocozocoautla toll roads, as well as the Chiapas Tower, the Ministry of Education, the undersecretaries of Planning and Federalized, as well as the Central Paying Office, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

Educators from Baja California demonstrated in Tijuana, freeing toll booths in Tijuana, Mexicali and Ensenada.

In Oaxaca, educators protested in the eight regions of the entity, in the capital and in suburban municipalities. In Acapulco, members of the State Coordinator of Education Workers in Guerrero took over four toll booths, and teachers from Morelos gathered in the Cuernavaca plaza.
