The National Civil Defense warned that the states in the South Region and part of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Center-West, could be hit by a strong storm between Sunday (16) and Monday (17).
A warning of great danger (red alert) was issued by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) for the area of greatest risk. The Southeast Region may also be affected.
THE red warning issued by Inmet indicates that the storm could cause rainfall of more than 100 millimeters (mm) in 24 hours and even hail. According to the institute’s meteorologist, Marcia Seabra, there is a condition for the formation of an extratropical cyclone.
“On Monday, this cold front should also reach the Southeast Region, reaching the state of São Paulo”, he warned.
Care
The meteorologist explains that the cyclone will form between Saturday and Sunday and move towards the ocean. “However, it will give rise to a cold front that will pass through the Southern states and part of the Midwest.”
Given this scenario, a preparation meeting was held this Friday (14) with state and municipal civil defenses.
The director of the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management (Cenad), Armin Braun, stated that this meeting organizes the actions for the weekend, as announced by the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development.
Tool
Braun added that the system has tools such as the Civil Defense Alert, implemented throughout the national territory. He highlights that the system uses the cell phone network to send text messages and sound warnings to cell phones in high-risk areas.
In cases of alerts, the information appears prominently on the device screen and may sound even if it is in silent mode. No prior registration is required and the service is free.
The tool provides, for example, information about the protective measures that must be taken. “The population needs to pay attention to the warnings and adopt the self-protection measures available through civil defense channels”, added the director of Cenad.
