Thousands of students affected by teacher strike in Piura

Thousands of students in the Piura region were harmed by the 24-hour strike carried out by members of the Single Union of Education Workers of Piura (SUTEP). In Piura, more than 20 thousand teachers joined the protest measure.

From the early hours of the morning, thousands of teachers from different public educational institutions mobilized through the various streets of the city of Piura.

“Once again, Sutep teachers take to the streets in defense of our rights in the face of the intransigence of the government that does not listen to and does not respect the agreements of the collective bargaining table. We are demanding that the law on pensions for the unemployed and retired, and school fees for teachers appointed this year be enacted,” said the general secretary of Sutep, Juana Ordinola Alama.

He warned that this 24-hour strike is a preventive measure and if the government does not resolve their requests they will take more radical measures, such as staggered strikes and finally an indefinite strike.

He specified that 90% of teachers in the region complied with the 24-hour strike, which represents more than 20 thousand teachers.

The teachers’ strike also asks the Government and the Congress of the Republic to fulfill assumed commitments, such as the payment of pending bonuses, the improvement of pensions for retired teachers and the increase of the Education sector budget to 6% of GDP.

Likewise, the teachers demanded that the exceptional regulations of the years 2020-2021 be respected, which was limited and left more than 21 thousand teachers throughout the country out of the appointment process.

They asked the regional governor, Luis Neyra León, to comply with the payment of social benefits that they have not received for more than three years.
