The former special envoy of the United States for Venezuela Elliott Abrams assured this Thursday, November 14, that the objective of the president’s Administration donald trump must be to end the government of Nicolás Maduro, but to do so the president must undertake even more pressure actions on Caracas.
“It will be a mission accomplished (for the Trump Government) when Maduro leaves”Abrams stated in a forum at the Atlantic Council, Washington’s think tank, who considered that in the current fight between the White House and the Maduro Administration only “one or the other can win.”
In any case, the former diplomat insisted that the US president, who recently said in a televised interview that Maduro’s days “are numbered,” “must do more” if he wants to overthrow Chavismo.
For Abrams, a key player in Trump’s campaign to remove Maduro from power in his first term, it is a “criminal regime”, which, according to him, makes it difficult to negotiate with Venezuela: “There has to be some type of uprising. “One of the things that the Venezuelan opposition should be saying is that their country needs an army and it should be a better trained, equipped and paid army.”
Military deployment should not be prolonged
The forum was held a few days after the arrival in the Caribbean of the United States’ largest and most sophisticated aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, and its strike group, which have joined the large contingent of destroyers or amphibious landing ships that Washington has deployed off the coast of Venezuela since the summer.
For Abrams, however, the US Navy cannot remain in the region much longer.

Abrams also referred to the words of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, who denied the information about Venezuela’s request for military aid to Moscow as a result of the escalation of tensions with the United States: «Russia is not going to do anything»said the former US envoy.
For another of the panelists, the former head of the US Southern Command Laura Richardson, the arrival of the aircraft carrier is part of a “pressure campaign” that seeks to increase the military muscle displayed against Venezuela.
“I think the Administration (Trump) is very clear in terms of the drugs that come to this country (from Venezuela) and the emergency crisis that we have on our hands,” noted the retired general.
Richardson also defended the destruction of twenty boats apparently loaded with drugs that have accompanied the military deployment in the Caribbean and led to the death of some 70 “narco-terrorists,” as Washington describes them.
