Maduro accuses social networks of joining "the psychological war against Venezuela"

In a meeting in Caracas with young supporters of Chavismo, Maduro reiterated his call to “win the battle of social networks”, in which, he said, Venezuelan youth has “made great strides”

Nicolás Maduro accused social networks this Thursday of “actively” joining what he called “psychological war” against Venezuela.

“All these people are actively incorporated into the conspiracy of psychological warfare against Venezuela,” he said while mentioning the Chinese application TikTok and Instagram, owned by Meta.

In a meeting in Caracas with young supporters of Chavismo, he reiterated his call to “win the battle of social networks,” in which, he said, Venezuelan youth has “made great strides.”

Last Monday, the Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, expressed that every Venezuelan with a telephone is “a reporter” in defense of the nation, in a context marked by the US military deployment in the Caribbean, described by the Maduro administration as a “threat” against him.

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), in a congress held last week, concluded that it is the duty of every militant of the official party “to assume communication work and international work to defend the truth of Venezuela in the face of the cognitive, communication and psychological war against the people and the permanent siege” against the homeland.

In August 2024, Maduro ordered the X network, owned by South African tycoon Elon Musk, to be suspended in his country for ten days, but since then it has remained blocked for Venezuelan users.

Prior to the announcement of the suspension of X, Nicolas Maduro The possibility had also arisen – at the suggestion of Conatel, he said – of removing Whatsapp and although it ordered its officials to use another channel to communicate, the messaging platform was not eliminated. At that time, he argued that he was betting “on the conscience of the people.”

Last year, the creation of a special commission in the National Assembly, dominated by Chavismo, was also announced to work on the creation of a law to regulate social networks in the country.

According to a report presented by the Freedom House organization on internet freedom, Venezuela had a drastic decline during the period from June 2024 to May 2025 that puts it in the “Not Free” category with an overall score of 26 out of 100, a drop of 4 points compared to the previous year.

According to the data in the report, Nicolás Maduro’s administration implemented a series of measures to “suffocate online dissent”, including the blocking of more than 200 web domains, especially news domains, between July 2024 and January 2025, according to data provided by the NGO.
