The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Indri) reported that it develops the intervention of Viajama riverin Azua, with the aim of reducing flood risks, protecting rural livelihoods and strengthening the security of families in the face of extreme weather events.
The entity reported, through a statement, that the adaptation and channeling of the Viajama river were determined after a meeting held in the area between the executive director of the Indri, Olmedo Cabaand residents, who expressed concern about the damage caused by recent rains.
In the municipality of The Yayasthe institution concluded the work on a 1.2 kilometer stretch, in response to the erosion caused by the overflow of the tributary, which penetrated about two meters into the main road and affected nearby homes.
The community Ramon Ramirezof The Yayasexpressed his satisfaction stating that “this situation had us very worried. Seeing the machines here and knowing that they are channeling the river gave us hope. We needed this answer and we appreciate the attention that the Indri has given us.”
Currently, the work is concentrated in the municipal district New Herdwhere the Indri execute a new phase of adaptation and channeling in the most vulnerable points of the same river.
This tributary considerably increases its flow in rainy seasons, causing overflows that affect homes, roads and agricultural areas. With these actions, the institution seeks mitigate risksprotect communities and guarantee the stability of the channel.
The president of the Neighborhood Council of that community, Jogenis Ramirezexpressed that “for us this is a reliefbecause every time the river rises we live in fear. We appreciate that you are working today; This intervention gives us back the tranquillity“.

These actions are part of the national plan that promotes the institution under the executive direction of Olmedo Caba Romano, focused on guaranteeing safe water management and the resilience of the most vulnerable communities in the country.
He Indri maintained that it maintains a permanent program of hydraulic works throughout the country, which includes cleaning canals and drains, adapting rivers and actions aimed at protecting human lives and guaranteeing crops.
The work at both points of the Viajama river are executed through the Directorate of Operations and Conservation of Irrigation Systems, in charge of Juan Carlos Novaand the Valle de Azua Regional, directed by Rafael Tejedareaffirming the institutional commitment to intervene in vulnerable areas and strengthen water security in the Southern region.
