The former president of the Republic, Pedro Castillowill be a candidate for Senate by the political party Together for Peru (JPP) in the General Elections 2026. Through the official account of Facebook of the political group, confirmed that Castillo Terrones will launch his candidacy with number 1.
In dialogue with The Republicthe congressman Roberto Sanchez confirmed the nomination of the former president. Likewise, he stated that Castillo’s candidacy “represents the majority support of the people who continue to demand justice, dignity and freedom, after a political persecution that we all know.”
“We are convinced that President Castillo will achieve a historic vote and, with this, will preside over the new Chamber of Senators, as a symbol of the return of the popular voice to the spaces of power,” he said.
On October 28, during the hearing of the oral trial for the attempted coup d’état in December 2022, Castillo showed his support for the JPP presidential formula, headed by Sánchez Palomino, Analí Márquez and Brígida Curo. “Together with Peru and together with the people, we are going to recover the government,” he said.

The oral trial against the former president is coming to an end. Currently, the judicial process is in its last stage: in the presentation and support of final arguments. After this part, the magistrates must give a verdict on the case.
The Prosecutor’s Office has requested a 34-year prison sentence against Castillo for the alleged crime of rebellion. However, if the judges decide to sentence him for conspiracy, it was requested that it be for 19 years.
According to the former president’s lawyer, Javier Adrianzén, in 2 weeks or before December 7, the arguments will be completed and a final decision will be made. In the event that it is not done before that day, Castillo could be released because he would already be detained for 3 years for preventive detention. According to the law, a person cannot spend more than 36 months in prison without a court sentence.

On the other hand, Congress seeks to disqualify the former head of state from public service for a period of 10 years for his attempted coup d’état in December 2022. Last Friday, November 7, the Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations (SAC) approved the final report that recommends prohibiting him from holding public office.
The document must go through the Permanent Commission and will be put to a vote. If approved, it will be sent to Plenary of Congress, in which the parliamentarians, less than the members of the Permanent Commissionthey will vote whether or not to disqualify Castillo.
If the former president is sentenced or disqualified, he will not be able to run for the Senate.
