Santo Domingo.- The First Investigative Court of the National District was designated to hear the preliminary trial against the brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, accused of the collapse of the roof of the nightclub Jet Set Cluba tragedy that occurred last April that claimed the lives of 236 people and left more than a hundred injured.
Judge Raymundo Mejía will hear the process, after being assigned through a computerized random draw by the coordinating judge of the Investigative Courts, Kenya Romero.
He Public Ministry Last Friday, November 7, he presented the formal accusation and request to open a trial against the Espaillat brothers, accused of the tragedy that occurred on April 8, 2025, in which the collapse of the roof of the famous entertainment center left hundreds of victims.
The accusation was filed with the Coordinating Office of the Investigative Courts of the National District and is signed by the deputy attorney general. Wilson Camachohead of the General Directorate of Persecution of Public Ministry, and the chief prosecutor of the National District, Rosalba Ramos, along with a team of prosecutors made up of Héctor García, Magalys Sánchez, Miguel Collado, Rosa Ysabel Mejía, Vladimir Viloria and Enmanuel Ramírez Sánchez.
The accusing body establishes that the defendants, as those responsible for the operation and administration of the premises, incurred manslaughter and unintentional blows and injuriescrimes punished by articles 319 and 320 of the Dominican Penal Code.
The investigation was carried out under a special instruction issued by the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynosowho ordered that the General Directorate of Persecution and the National District Prosecutor’s Office assume the criminal process to determine the causes of the collapse.
Prosecutors maintain that the Espaillat brothers They aggravated their responsibility by overloading the roof structure with large air conditioning equipment and water tanks, without having technical studies to guarantee its structural resistance.
Besides, They ignored internal warnings on the deterioration of the property, prioritizing cost reduction despite the obvious risks.
The judicial document includes the technical reports prepared by the experts Leonardo de Jesús Reyes Madera (earthquake resistant engineer), Eduardo A. Fierro (president of BFP Engineers) and Máximo José Corominas Quezada (pathological engineer), who concluded that the structural failure was due to excessive loading and lack of preventive maintenance of the building.
