Farmers and transporters announced a national strike for November 24, which will include blocking the passage of cargo units – avoiding affecting individuals – and the take customs.
After demonstrating yesterday in the capital’s Zócalo, representatives of the National Front for the Rescue of the Mexican Countryside (FNRCM), the Peasant Agricultural Movement and the National Association of Transporters (ANTAC) estimated that half a million farmers in 25 entities of the country will participate in the protest, and transport operators will also join.
They indicated that they will resume their mobilizations to demand more security on the roads, guaranteed prices for crops, the departure of basic grains from the T-MEC and that they be taken into account in the discussion of the National Water Law.
In a conference from the Plaza de la Constitución, Baltazar Valdez Arce, leader of the FNRCM, indicated that with the protests they seek to make visible the crisis facing the countryside and to discuss the producers’ petition with President Claudia Sheinbaum. Likewise, they ask that the government recognize agriculture as a sector of national interest.
The farmers also rejected the agreement reached last week between the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), Julio Berdegué, with producers from Bajío to set “the highest price of the decade” for white corn in that region; Instead, they spoke out in favor of guaranteed prices for all farmers of this grain.
Eraclio Rodríguez Gómez, another of the FNRCM leaders, pointed out that they do not agree with granting subsidies to the countryside, since that only benefits large companies and does not help the improvement of agriculture.
The leader of ANTAC, David Estévez, accused that 60 thefts of cargo vehicles are reported daily in the country and there have been more complaints of corruption on the roads since the National Guard took control.
