Santo Domingo.- The Wide Frontdemanded a thorough and immediate investigation about him general blackout occurred yesterday afternoonafter a failure in the substation of the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED), located in San Pedro de Macorís.
The event, which caused the chain departure of all the generating plants including those of Catalina Pointonce again highlighted the fragility of the national electrical system and the lack of technical and institutional foresight to guarantee a stable and safe service to citizens.
“It is not acceptable that in the 21st century a failure in a substation causes the total collapse of the national electrical system. This fact must be clarified and assumed responsibly, without pretense or evasions,” declared María Teresa Cabrera, who also demanded absolute transparency in the information about the causes and those responsible for the event.
The Frente Amplio warned that this type of blackouts has a devastating impact on the productive sectors, affecting industries, businesses, hospitals, and the daily lives of millions of Dominicans.
“Every hour without power represents economic losses, interruptions in essential services and a recoil for the already hit popular economy,” the organization warned.

The political organization demanded from the Government and the authorities of the electrical sector including the ETED, the Superintendence of Electricity and the Ministry of Energy and Mines accountable to the country and establish a national emergency plan that guarantees the stability and safety of the transmission system.
Finally, The Frente Amplio reiterated that this blackout “cannot be treated as a simple technical event”but as a structural symptom of the lack of transparent public investmenteffective planning and supervision of the national energy system, which continues to be mortgaged by private interests.
