A 23-year-old nurse, murdered in the middle of the street in Pinar del Río by her ex-partner

Madrid/Liena de la Caridad Reinoso Ramos, only 23 years old, was murdered on November 6 by her ex-partner in the middle of a public street in the La Conchita neighborhood, in Pinar del Río. The news, which had been circulating for days on social networks, was verified this Tuesday by the Yo Sí Te Creo observatories in Cuba and Alas Tensas. With this there are now at least 36 femicides committed in Cuba so far this year, according to the registry of 14ymedio.

Reinoso, a nurse by profession, was stabbed multiple times by her ex-partner, identified on social media as a custodian and son of a senior from the Ministry of the Interior. Some versions claim that this would have meant advantageous conditions for the alleged murderer, who was arrested and taken, without handcuffs, to the police station, accompanied by his father.

Ramos has been praised online by a fellow student who identifies her as “an excellent girl, very hard-working, loved and respected by everyone who knew her. I speak first-hand, because I studied with her in Pre,” she stated, before asking that the person responsible be “punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

It had only been four days since the second sexist crime reported in November had been confirmed, the one that ended the life of Yudislaimi Valdés Silediro, 28 years old. The feminicide occurred on the 3rd at the hands of her partner and in the home they both shared in the town of El Mamey, in San Nicolás de Bari, Mayabeque. The deceased had a young daughter, although it has not been revealed whether the alleged murderer was her father.

Feminist observatories place the sexist murders committed in Cuba at 40 so far this year – four of them are counted as violent deaths by this newspaper –, to which are added 15 attempted feminicides and three cases that require access to police investigation: those of Hilda Puig Peña, Nieves Rosa Castrillo Núñez and Fredesvinda Zaida Pérez Poey. They also mention a man murdered for reasons of gender and four possible new cases that are pending information. “Citizens, reporting these crimes is not a crime,” they ask Cubans.

One of the previous reported cases took, in fact, more than a month to be confirmed. It was the one of Maidelin Reyes Hernandezallegedly attacked by her ex-partner on September 24 in Camagüey and whose feminicide was confirmed on November 4.

I Yes I Believe in Cuba and Alas Tensas also recalled this Tuesday that one year and three months have passed since the disappearance of Yanara Fernández Méndez, of which there is still no news. The 39-year-old woman was last seen on August 5, 2024 in Las Tunas and suffered from schizophrenia, although it was controlled with the medical treatment she was following and the support of her family, who fears even more what happened to her.

Less than two months before the end of the year, there have been 16 fewer femicides than at the end of 2024, when there were 52 according to the ’14ymedio’ record.

The number of murders due to sexist violence that occurred on the Island is unknown, since a good number does not transcend networks and the Government only provides figures of the cases tried. Last year, 76 femicides came to court, although the dates on which the crimes occurred were not provided.

The country is still waiting for a comprehensive law against gender violence, the first steps of which the authorities have promised for 2026.
